HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police have released new information regarding a fatal car crash that occurred in Hilo last month.
In a news release, police identified the motorist who was killed in the Sept. 29 incident as 59-year-old Brian Smith of Mountain View.
Officers responded to the scene on Railroad Avenue near the intersection with Laniaula Street at about 7:15 p.m. Investigators determined that Smith was driving a 2001 Mazda multi-purpose vehicle north on Railroad Avenue when he veered to the right onto a gravel shoulder area and traveled approximately 150 feet before striking a shipping container.
Smith was pronounced dead after being transported to the Hilo Medical Center. No one else was in the vehicle at the time.
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation, which is continuing.
