MAUI, HI – The Maui Police Department is investigating a car wreck in Lahaina early Wednesday morning that left three people dead, reports Hawaii News Now.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash on Honoapiilani Highway in the vicinity of Kikowaena Way. According to investigators, the driver of a Ford Escape was traveling at high speed at about 3 a.m. when the vehicle crossed over the center line and crashed into a Kia Soul head-on, causing the Ford to catch fire.
The driver of the Ford, a 22-year-old man, the driver of the Kia, an 81-year-old man, and a passenger in the Kia, a 75-year-old woman, died at the scene. The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
Police said that speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident.
