MAUI, HI – A man was arrested in connection with a collision in Kahului that killed a bicyclist, reports Hawaii News Now.
Maui police said the victim was riding a bicycle in the westbound lane on Pulehu Road Thursday morning at about 11:25 a.m. An investigation indicated that the driver of an eastbound Jeep Gladiator pickup truck was passing and overtaking other vehicles when he hit the bicycle rider.
The victim, identified as 59-year-old Volker Weiss of Kihei, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup, a 61-year-old Kula man, stayed at the scene. He was later arrested for first-degree negligent homicide.
Police suspect that speed was a contributing factor in the incident, and were still awaiting the result of drug and alcohol toxicology tests. Weiss was reported to have been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
