NORTH KONA, HI – A moped accident in North Kona has claimed the life of a 72-year-old man, reports KITV.
The victim was identified as David Howard McElhaney of Kailua-Kona. Investigators said McElhaney was operating a 2022 Zhilong TSL motor scooter going west on Kaiminani Drive June 18 when he lost control while make a left turn onto Kahilihili Street and crashed.
McElhaney was first taken to Kona Community Hospital by Hawai‘i Fire Department medics and was then transported to Queens Medical Center on Oʻahu. He was pronounced dead there on Friday morning.
Police said McElhaney was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. It is not believed that speed or impairment were contributing factors. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident was asked to contact the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit.
