SOUTH KOHALA, HI – Hawai’i Island police said a man has been arrested in connection with a crash that shut down Akoni Pule Highway last Wednesday afternoon.
In a news release, police said the driver of a 2001 Peterbilt dump truck was traveling west on the highway near Kawaihae Harbor at about 2:30 p.m. when he lost control of the truck, veered off of the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned. The crash caused the vehicle to spill its load of asphalt.
The driver of the dump truck, 60-year-old Jeffrey Anderson of Naalehu, was able to extricate himself from the vehicle. He was treated and released at the North Hawaii Community Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The highway was shut down for three hours while crews removed the vehicle and debris from the roadway.
Anderson was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, and was later released pending further investigation.
