HILO, HI – Hawaii Island police said they are investigating a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred early Saturday morning in Hilo.
In a news release, police said South Hilo patrol officers responded to the scene on Kilauea Avenue near the intersection with Puainako Street at about 12:36 a.m.
They determined that the driver of a 1990 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling southbound on Kilauea Avenue when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a utility pole.
The driver of the motorcycle, a 45-year-old man from Mountain View, was pronounced dead after being taken to the Hilo Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Investigators believe speed and inattention were the main factors in the accident.
