KAUAI, HI – Police said an arrest was made in a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in Hanamā‘ulu on Friday night.
A press release from the Kauai Police Department states that officers responded at about 9:15 p.m. to reports of a man lying on the side of Kūhiō Highway near a 7-11 store. The pedestrian, identified as 42-year-old Alfred Lopes of Hanamā‘ulu, was pronounced dead Sunday at Queen’s Medical Center.
Police determined that he had been struck by a vehicle which fled the scene. The driver was later identified as 36-year-old Tiffany Jeffries of Hanamā‘ulu. The vehicle involved was a 2021 Chevrolet pickup truck which displayed visible damage consistent with a pedestrian collision, investigators said.
Jeffries was arrested for first-degree negligent injury, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury, and inattention to driving.
She was released pending further investigation of the case.
