KALIHI, HI – A woman riding a moped was killed in a collision with a vehicle in Kalihi last week, police said.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the fatal crash happened Wednesday Dec. 10 on Houghtailing Street at 7:12 p.m.
The initial investigation indicated that a 22-year-old woman was riding a moped southbound at a high rate of speed when she tried to make a left turn onto Olomea Street and collided with a vehicle going north on Houghtailing Street.
The moped rider, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle, a 72-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the crash scene.
Investigators said speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the collision, but there was no determination yet on whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
It marked the 79th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 47 at the same time in 2024.
