KULA, HI – A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Holopuni Road in Kula on Saturday afternoon, according to the Maui Police Department.
A preliminary investigation found that the driver of a 1998 Toyota 4-Runner was heading west at about 5:15 p.m. and lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a left bend in the roadway near Pulehua Road.
The vehicle crossed left of the double solid yellow centerline, then the driver overcorrected in an attempt to return to the westbound lane. The Toyota subsequently crossed back over the lane into the dirt shoulder, where it began to roll and re-enter the roadway.
The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as 21-year-old Hilalia Villanueva-Langi of Kula. She was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Investigators said the involvement of speed is considered a contributing factor in the fatal wreck, but it has not yet been determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
