HILO, HI – The driver killed in a crash of two pickup trucks in Hilo earlier this month has been identified, according to KITV.
The victim of the Jan. 15 wreck was 26-year-old Michael Taione of Maui, officials said. The collision occurred near the intersection of Highway 19 and Hikina Place at about 6:23 p.m.
The Hawaii Police Department’s preliminary investigation found that Taione was heading south on Highway 19 and crossed over the center line, colliding head-on with a 2022 Chevy Silverado.
Taione was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead. The Chevy driver, a 46-year-old Laupahoehoe woman, was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening and was released.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the wreck.
