Teenage driver dies after crashing into barrier on Pali Highway

KAILUA, HI – A fiery car crash in Kailua early Thursday morning claimed the life of a teenage driver, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The wreck took place on the Kailua-bound side of Pali Highway at about 6 a.m.   An initial investigation found that a 16-year-old girl was driving at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the right concrete barrier.

The car went airborne, plunged about 50 feet into a ravine, skidded across the ravine, hit an embankment, and caught fire.  The Honolulu Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames and found no one in the vehicle.

Firefighters searched the surrounding area and found the driver unresponsive in the brush below the embankment.  She died at the scene.
