AIEA, HI – A woman died after being struck by a vehicle in the Aiea area on Thursday night, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The collision took place on Moanalua Road near the intersection of Ualo Street. According to the police department’s Traffic Division, the 76-year-old pedestrian was crossing Moanalua Road in a marked crosswalk at about 9:23 p.m. when she was hit by a westbound vehicle.
The pedestrian was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition by EMS. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office notified police on Friday that the woman had passed away from her injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, a 52-year-old woman, was not injured and stayed at the scene. Police said she showed signs of impairment, and she was arrested for first-degree negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Following the victim’s death, the first charge was reclassified as first-degree negligent homicide.
Investigators said alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the fatal incident, but they are still trying to determine whether speed or drugs were involved.
