Passenger, 22, killed in multi-vehicle collision on Moanalua Road in Kalihi

KALIHI, HI – A man was killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Moanalua Road in the Kalihi area on Friday, the Honolulu Police Department reported.

A preliminary investigation by the police department’s Traffic Division indicated that a 22-year-old man was driving east at a high rate of speed at about 3:30 p.m. when his vehicle sideswiped another vehicle. The 22-year-old lost control and crashed into the back of a third vehicle, causing that vehicle to rear-end a fourth vehicle.

A passenger in the first car, a 22-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Two other passengers, a 22-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, were hospitalized in serious condition while another passenger, a 25-year-old woman, was in good condition.

The driver of the second car, a 65-year-old man, and his passenger, a 52-year-old man, were not injured and stayed at the scene. The driver of the third vehicle, a 33-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in good condition. The driver of the fourth vehicle, a 65-year-old man, was not injured and remained at the scene.

Police said speed and alcohol appeared to be contributing factors in the collision.
