Hawaii Island Police were dispatched to the 109-mile marker on Mamalahoa Highway near the intersection of Koa Road after the incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m.

Preliminary details indicated that a 19-year-old man was on the mauka shoulder of the road when he jumped into the path of an oncoming Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

The pedestrian was listed in critical condition after being taken to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu.  The driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the collision.
