LĪHU‘E, HI – A driver was hospitalized in critical condition following a single-vehicle crash in Līhu‘e on Monday night, according to the Kauai Police Department.
Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Kūhiō Highway and Kāpule Highway after the wreck was reported at 9:30 p.m. A man driving a 2004 Chevrolet truck was traveling eastbound on Kūhiō Highway when he lost control of the vehicle, police said. The truck hit a traffic barrier, a traffic signal pole, a metal gate, and a wooden fence. Authorities believe the driver may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the accident.
The driver, a 62-year-old man from Kealia, was initially transported to Wilcox Medical Center and was then flown to Straub Medical Center for further treatment.
Investigators do not believe speed or impairment were contributing factors in the incident.
