WAIKIKI, HI – Two people were critically injured in a recent accident involving a moped in the Waikiki area.
The Honolulu Police Department released details of the Feb. 20 incident, which occurred on Royal Hawaiian Avenue near the intersection of Kalakaua Avenue. An initial investigation determined that a moped heading southbound at about 3:37 p.m. rear-ended a vehicle.
The moped operator, a 25-year-old man, and his passenger, a 53-year-old man, were ejected onto the roadway and taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The two were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the scene. His passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was transported to an area hospital in good condition.
Police said speed, drugs or alcohol were not believed to be contributing factors in the collision.
