The weather in Hawaii is warm and wonderful year-round, and to take advantage of the great climate, many people choose walking as their main form of transportation. Foot traffic has greatly increased in and around the city of Honolulu especially. It is a fact that accidents will happen when pedestrians and vehicles are in close proximity. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents have plagued the state of Hawaii in recent years. Any accident involving a pedestrian has a greater chance of being fatal.
Recently in Honolulu, a motorist fled the scene of an accident that killed a pedestrian. The accident happened on Makani Road during the evening hours. According to reports, a pedestrian who was walking along the shoulder of the road was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound.
Authorities said the pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, the pedestrian died a short time later at the hospital. Reportedly, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident. Police said they located the vehicle a short time later in the Pukalani area and placed the driver under arrest
Drivers and pedestrians should pay attention to their surroundings at all times, especially in crowded cities. Significant pedestrian safety improvements have been made along roadways throughout the state, but accidents can’t totally be prevented. Those in Hawaii who have suffered the loss of a loved one as a result of negligence in a pedestrian accident could benefit from discussions with an experienced attorney. Families could receive a substantial monetary award from a successful lawsuit.
