Although there are more drivers than ever before in Hawaii, most people still travel by foot. Unfortunately, Hawaii has recently been marred by numerous deadly pedestrian accidents. The high number of vehicles sharing roadways could be a reason for the increased numbers of crashes involving pedestrians. Unfortunately, any accident involving a pedestrian is more likely to be fatal.
A recent accident in Maili claimed the life of one pedestrian and seriously injured another. The accident happened on Farrington Highway at the Linakola Street intersection during the evening hours. According to reports, a man and a woman were attempting to cross the intersection when they were suddenly struck by a westbound Pontiac sedan.
Police said the impact of the collision knocked the man into the eastbound lane of the highway where he was struck by another vehicle. Authorities said both the man and the woman were seriously injured and rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Tragically, the man later died at the hospital. Police said both pedestrians were in a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. They suspect speed may have contributed to the crash.
It is important that drivers and pedestrians remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times to prevent these types of accidents. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents have increased at an alarming rate in the last few years. Those in Hawaii who have suffered the loss of a loved one as a result of negligence in a pedestrian accident can discuss the matter with an experienced attorney. If negligence is proved, families could receive a substantial monetary award to help recover any financial losses.
