Hawaii Man Accused of Causing 2 DUI Auto Accidents in 2 Days

According to authorities, the number of arrests for drunk driving in Hawaii so far this year exceeds 1,000. A police spokesperson says penalties for DUI-related auto accidents seem to be inadequate to deter drivers from drinking and driving. A recent arrest of a man who struck a pedestrian on Dec. 1 underscores this theory.

According to an arrest report, the 68-year-old man struck a 51-year-old tourist in front of a condo complex when the driver failed to maintain control of his vehicle. The pedestrian suffered critical injuries, and he was rushed to a hospital from where he was later airlifted to another medical center. Reportedly, he remains in a critical condition. The driver is accused of being drunk at the time of the accident.

After the arrest, police reportedly determined that the driver was also arrested for drunk driving one day earlier. At that time, on Nov. 30, he apparently smashed into a parked vehicle. The police spokesman says this proves his theory about the ineffectiveness of the current penalties for drunk driving.

Victims of auto accidents in Hawaii that resulted from the drunk driving or other negligence of other parties may seek financial relief through the civil justice system. If negligence can be proved, a personal injury lawsuit may be successful. After liability is determined, the court may enter a monetary judgment to cover the documented claims for financial losses and emotional damages sustained. The navigation of such a lawsuit may be challenging, especially if the injuries caused long-term health problems. An experienced personal injury attorney can provide the necessary guidance and support to ease the legal proceedings.
